Cemetery damaged

A Much Wenlock cemetery tended by a community group suffered damage in January when unknown vandals ploughed their vehicle or vehicles through it, leaving ground turned up and property broken.

Wenlock Town Council’s Sharon Clayton says, “We’re very angry and upset about the damage to sacred ground. It’s really disrespectful for the dead and the loved ones they have left behind who tend their graves. As the vehicle turned onto the grass, it broke a lamp that a loved one had placed on a grave and the wheels were very close to the edge of a recent burial.

“The Town Council puts a lot of resources into the cemetery with the help of the Friends of the Cemetery who continue to do sterling work. This behaviour is quite unnecessary, and the Town Council now has to spend tax payers’ money repairing the damage and installing security to make sure it won’t happen again.”

Sharon concludes, “We want people to know that we are doing all that we can to find the culprit(s) and it has been reported to the police although, without witnesses, there’s not a lot we can do. However, we hope that someone will come forward with information that will help to find them. We’re very grateful to Suzanne Boulos who provided the photos on the Town Council’s Facebook page and to Paul Hutchinson who took aerial photos.”

If you have any information, call the Town Council on 01952 727509 or call West Mercia police on 101.
