This landmark play by Edward Albee was famously bought to the silver screen in 1966, in a version starring Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor. The new stage version of ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?’ stars Imelda Staunton and will be streamed live from the National Theatre to the Edge Arts Centre on 18 May.
The story takes place in the early hours of the morning on the campus of an American college, where Martha, much to her husband George’s displeasure, has invited a new professor and his wife to their home for some after-party drinks. As the alcohol flows and dawn approaches, the young couple are drawn into George and Martha’s toxic games until the evening reaches its climax in a moment of devastating truth-telling.
