Telford Concert Band goes platinum

Telford Concert Band is celebrating a major milestone after being awarded Platinum – the highest possible accolade – at the National Concert Band Festival Finals. The finals were at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.

It’s an especially impressive achievement given this was the band’s first time taking part in the festival. The Platinum award recognises not just the standard of performance, but the commitment, consistency and shared passion that has brought the band to this point.

Their programme included a selection of pieces, among them Hope Ahead by Brian Balmages – a work built around themes of optimism and resilience. It proved a fitting choice, reflecting both how far the band has come and the direction it’s heading in.

Formed nearly seven years ago, Telford Concert Band has grown into a welcoming and inclusive musical community in the heart of Shropshire. Its members come from a wide mix of backgrounds and experience levels – from seasoned players and those with military roots, including former Abraham Darby Showband members, to people rediscovering their instruments after time away. That blend has helped shape a supportive environment where everyone plays a part in the band’s sound.

The band is led by Musical Director Neil Morgan MBE, who took on the role in January 2026. Rehearsing weekly in Dawley, the group performs a varied repertoire, from classical and contemporary works to film scores, theatre music and traditional marches.

Alongside concerts, the band regularly supports local events, parish councils and charities, sharing live music with audiences across the region.

Speaking about the achievement, Chairwoman Stacey Westbrook said: “This is a huge moment for us – not just musically, but personally too. It reflects the hard work, belief and commitment of everyone in the band. To come away with Platinum at our first National Concert Band Festival Finals is something we’re incredibly proud of, and it gives us real momentum for what’s next.”

The result marks an exciting step forward for the band, highlighting both its musical progress and the strong sense of community at its heart. The band’s success at the National Concert Band Festival Finals highlights its continued growth, strong leadership, and the powerful sense of community at its core.
