Ludlow Castle launches Summer of History

Ludlow Castle is preparing for a busy August as it launches a Summer of History with a programme of medieval entertainment, live demonstrations and historical experiences.

Running throughout August, a series of in-house events brings together family activities, live demonstrations and special appearances, giving visitors the chance to experience Ludlow Castle’s history in different ways. The programme includes regular weekly activities alongside one of the castle’s most popular annual events.

Gemma England, General Manager at Ludlow Castle, said: “Summer is one of our busiest and most enjoyable times of year. We welcome families who visit every holiday, alongside people discovering the castle for the first time, so it’s important that there’s always something new to experience.”

Available daily throughout August, the castle’s self-guided Heraldry Trail invites visitors to explore the grounds while uncovering the meaning behind medieval coats of arms. Along the way, they’ll discover how colours, symbols and animals were used to identify knights and noble families, learning more about the Castle’s history as they explore.

Every Tuesday in August the Jester From Chester will offer a lively mix of storytelling, medieval games and audience participation. Suitable for all ages, the performances offer a light-hearted introduction to historical entertainment!

Every Thursday throughout August, visitors can watch birds of prey take to the skies above the castle while learning about the important role falconry played in medieval life. The demonstrations offer the chance to see these magnificent birds up close and discover more about a tradition that has been associated with castles for centuries.

Taking place on 15 and 16 August, Knights & Castles by History Adventures celebrates the world of medieval knights. The Summer of History programme culminates on 29, 30 and 31 August with the Beaufort Companye, who will be setting up camp in the Outer Bailey. Across the weekend, the castle will be transformed into a medieval encampment complete with craftsmen, armour displays, combat demonstrations and living history experiences. Visitors can immerse themselves in the buzz of the camp, chat to the reenactors, watch hand-to-hand combat and see Wars of the Roses in 30 Minutes. There will also be Have-a-Go Archery running throughout the weekend.
