Ludlow martial arts club success

Borderlands Grappling, Ludlow’s premier Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) and submission wrestling academy, has marked a historic milestone by promoting its very first cohort of dedicated students to the coveted rank of blue belt.

The promotions took place during the club’s Summer Grading, an event that brought the local martial arts community together for a day of technical assessments, a friendly “mini-competition,” an open mat training session, and a celebratory social gathering.

While the club has previously attracted established practitioners, this grading represents the first time individuals who started their martial arts journeys from scratch in Ludlow have ascended to the rank of blue belt under the tutelage of Head Coach and BJJ Black Belt, Owain Williams.

In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, earning a blue belt is widely recognized as one of the sport’s toughest achievements, typically requiring two years of consistent, physically demanding training to master the complex defensive and offensive fundamentals.

Owain said: “Promoting our very first group of homegrown blue belts is a massive moment for Borderlands Grappling. When we opened our doors in Ludlow, the goal was to build a safe, ego-free environment where absolute beginners could thrive. Seeing students walk through our doors with zero experience and watching them develop into highly technical, disciplined blue belts is incredibly rewarding. It proves that small-town clubs can foster elite martial arts talent.”

The grading event highlighted the community spirit that has caused Borderlands Grappling to thrive since its inception. Following the formal belt and stripe promotions, the academy hosted an internal mini-tournament, allowing students to test their skills in a supportive environment, before opening the floor to a “open mat” that welcomed visiting grapplers from across Shropshire and Herefordshire.

Operating out of Cast Iron Culture on the Burway Trading Estate and Ludlow Primary School, Borderlands Grappling has grown rapidly by challenging the traditional stereotypes of combat sports. The academy offers structured, inclusive programmes, including the Borderlands Minis (ages 4–8), Borderlands Juniors (ages 8–14), and a dedicated women-only class.
