A narrative song

Originally from New York, Richard Shindell is a writer whose songs paint pictures, tell stories and evoke entire worlds along the way. Join him as he performs pieces from his album ‘Careless’ at the Hive, Shrewsbury on Sunday 8 December at 7.45pm.

Taking up the guitar at the age of eight, Richard listened but imagined that composing a song was out of the question. After college, he headed to Europe with his guitar and while performing in the Paris Metro, he said, “I loved the acoustics in those tunnels, but only when they were empty.”

Upon running out of money he entered Union Theological Seminary, where the celestial acoustics of the chapel inspired ‘On a Sea of Fleur de Lis’. Its underlying themes, transcendence and human and divine love, have continued to resonate through his subsequent work, right up to the present. Ticketsto Richard’s performance are £15; visit hiveonline.org.uk .
