Friends in high places

Children from a local school were delighted to receive letters from a couple of high-profile figures while they were preparing an assembly on the topics of recycling and saving the oceans. Sir David Attenborough, famed for his commentary on documentaries such as Blue Planet, replied to a request to attend an assembly from Y5 students at Moreton Hall with a handwritten letter.

Zinnia Evans and Cecily Tyne were contributing to the whole school theme of Saving the Planet, as part of which children were encouraged to design posters and robots, make recycled artwork and calculate their water usage. The girls took the initiative to invite Sir David and PM Theresa May to take part in their assembly. Due to their busy schedules, they were unable to attend… but they both wrote replies to Zinnia and Cecily.

Sir David responded with a touching handwritten letter stating he was “so glad you are telling people about the dangers of plastic waste”. Zinnia, who wrote the letter, says, “When I sent a letter to David Attenborough, I was hoping he would come but I never thought he would send a handwritten letter to me with his famous signature on!”
Cecily, who wrote to Theresa May, says she was “amazed to get a letter back from the Prime Minister.”
