Celebrating a special Shropshire musician

A Shropshire-born musician, composer, music historian and writer will be celebrated at a concert in Shrewsbury on 5 June.

The event, at St Chad’s Church, will feature Ex Cathedra (pictured), one of Britain’s best choirs, marking the 300th anniversary of Dr Charles Burney’s birth with a European ‘grand tour’ programme of the music of his time, 1726-1814.

The concert starts at 7.30pm and will be preceded at 6.30pm by a 30-minute conversation about Dr Burney with Ex Cathedra’s director, Jeffrey Skidmore.

Charles Burney, who was born in Shrewsbury, was not only an internationally significant composer, organist and teacher but also a pioneering music historian whose writings shaped how Europeans understood their musical past. His career bridged performance and scholarship at a time when such a dual role was rare.

“This should be a very special evening, celebrating the life of one of Shrewsbury’s most prominent historical figures,” said John Moore of event organiser Shropshire Music Trust.
