The story behind the Severn

A Shropshire filmmaker has released a new short film exploring the story behind the River Severn’s name, and the legend that became attached to it.

The filmmaker, who creates films as The Bearded Wanderer, focuses on overlooked local history, folklore, and the stories tied to real places. The latest film looks at the Severn’s names — Hafren in Welsh and Sabrina in Latin — and how they became linked to the tale of a drowned princess.

Using original footage, local landscape, and historical research, the film explores where that story came from, what sits behind it, and why certain legends remain so firmly attached to the places around us.

The Bearded Wanderer (pictured)  said: “A lot of people know the story in fragments, but I wanted to dig a bit deeper into where it came from and why it has lasted.”

The film is available to watch online via The Bearded Wanderer.
