The Monday Club is back!

One of the results of the pandemic has been an increased sense of isolation and loneliness for many people, young and old.

The elderly, in particular, have had to shield for many months from a disease with threatens them more than any other section of society. For those who live alone, in particular, it has often meant many days without seeing another soul. Day centres and clubs which traditionally provided company and friendship were forced to shut during lockdown.

One such was Bridgnorth Monday Club, which had been going for more than 20 years until it had to close its doors last year at the height of the pandemic.

Great news, though. The Club is set to re-open on September 6, launching its comeback with a coffee morning at its regular venue, The Bungalow at the back of Innage Lane car park.

“The format of the Club is for local people to come together for a chat, games, and fun for those who want mixed company once they have left work. Outings and lunches are arranged, and the community bus is borrowed for these,” explains Chairman of the Trustees, Julia Davies.

The Monday Club has its own free car park and, importantly in the current climate, well-ventilated bright rooms with flat access and fresh décor.

“The Club is completely run by volunteers and has only ever made a small charge on the day to cover food consumed as fundraising has always supported the activities,” Julia continues.

Pat Thomas and Marie Gaynor are the main organisers, and they are inviting people to the coffee morning, to be held between 10am and 12pm, to help draw up a list of activities for the next few months, which they will then arrange.

“People can just turn up. We find some people want a name to contact if they are coming alone and Pat and Marie are very good at welcoming them by name then. No joining fee is ever asked for, only good company,” Julia adds.
