Bridgnorth Walk Success

BNW start1

One of the best-known dates in the Bridgnorth calendar is the late May Bank Holiday, when intrepid walkers set off from the High Street, walk 11 miles to the bottom of Brown Clee, scale it and walk back. It sounds like a tough gig – and it is! Anyone who’s completed the challenging event will know how demanding this walk is, so hats off to all those who participate.

This year’s charity walk was a well-organised and successful event as people turned out in force to cheer on 560 senior walkers. Ditton Priors was also crowded with people supporting the 146 junior walkers and the senior walkers as they trooped past.

Secretary Peter Davison said, “Despite the numbers being down on last year, around £108,000 was raised for charities and good causes, matching the amounts paid out to charities in previous years. We introduced an entry fee this year making it easier for sponsors to give more money directly to specific charities. Any surplus will go towards the marshal’s nominated charities or the charitable organisations that help out at the event.”

On Monday 7 July at 7.30pm at St Marys Church, prizes will be presented and fundraisers can say a little about their charity. Among the first finishers were Andrew Simmons from Bridgnorth, walking for Bridgnorth Lions, and Vicky Morris, also from Bridgnorth, walking for the Wheatland Hunt Pony Club. Other top finishers were Lorna Wickens, Bryony Hunter and Louise Norgrove, Will Green, Charles Thornton and Harold Hill. The oldest walker was Mike Swales from Bridgnorth, who celebrated his 79th birthday on walk day, walking for Bridgnorth Lions. Our congratulations to all!
