Bridgnorth musician’s 2.5 million milestone

Bridgnorth based guitar duo Whalebone are celebrating after their music has recorded over 2.5 million streams on Spotify, with their tunes being played in over 70 countries worldwide.

The duo, comprising Charlotte Watson and Steve Downs, have been recording and performing together for 15 years, but the online trend is a recent development. ‘Spotify didn’t exist when Whalebone first started’ said Charlotte, ‘and the idea of our music being played around the world would have been pretty unbelievable back then. It’s a great way to get our music heard, especially during the current pandemic.’

Listeners in countries as diverse as Nicaragua and Liechtenstein are listening to the duo, with particularly good support from the USA, Brazil and Australia. ‘Instrumental music has an advantage that there’s no language barrier’ said Steve. ‘Guitar music is guitar music whether you’re listening in Latin America or Scandinavia. Even so, it’s taken us by surprise, and it’s strange to think of someone in, say, Mexico, listening to music that was written and recorded in Bridgnorth.’
