Geography lessons are surprisingly varied at Shrewsbury High School, seeking explanations about how the world works, and helping pupils think about alternative futures.
As part of this, staff at Shrewsbury High School work hard to use the rich and varied resources which are right on our doorstep. A group of Year 10 pupils studying the flood alleviation barriers near the Welsh Bridge in Shrewsbury, with Head of Geography John High. In the depth of winter pupils in Year 10 undertook a Field Study where they surveyed the flood alleviation scheme at Frankwell in Shrewsbury, taking particular notice of the demountable barriers and the pumping stations. Their work involved understanding wider considerations when designing flood defences and gaining stakeholder involvement.
Meanwhile, Year 11 were engaged in a Field Study monitoring how sustainable different areas of central Shrewsbury are. Tasks varied from asking shoppers their mode of transport to Shrewsbury to checking how dirty window ledges were with a wet-wipe! Fortunately the weather held and now the hard work starts; collating all our data and commencing the analysis!
John High, the school’s Head of Geography, is keen to make the most of the resources right on the doorstep, “We have a wealth of Geography here in Shropshire, and it is great that the girls can take advantage of all this, just a few minutes’ walk from the school.”
