Community theatre measures up

The new Holroyd Community Theatre, near Oswestry, designed by Gareth Edwards of local Architectural practice DPA Design and constructed by builders Jones Brothers using many locally sourced labour and materials, has been shortlisted as a finalist in the West Midlands LABC Building Excellence Awards 2020.

The Holroyd Community Theatre, with its distinct design, emerging from the Shropshire landscape in the grounds of Moreton Hall, has been recognised in the national construction awards under the category of Best Public Service / Educational Building, nominated by DPA.

Judged by a panel of construction industry experts the awards celebrate the highest quality projects from around England and Wales and reward the best in technical innovation, construction quality, sustainability and creative design.

The Theatre’s impressive foyer and 180 seat auditorium has been designed to provide a bespoke performance space and promises to be not only a venue for local performers but also a destination of choice for professional touring companies, when its doors can officially reopen following lockdown imposed by COVID-19.

Chris Jones, Director of Weston Rhyn’s Jones Brothers and a fourth generation builder leading on the construction of the project said: “We are delighted to be shortlisted for this prestigious industry award, it’s a testament to the hard work put in by the whole team.”

Paul Everall CBE, Chief Executive at LABC commented: “These awards are different. They aren’t about good looks or fancy design (although many winners incorporate both). They are about quality and standards. No other building awards look at how well buildings are put together from start to finish and the skills and competencies of those who design and construct them. We are very proud of everyone involved – they show the way ahead for the industry.”

George Budd, Principal of Moreton Hall concluded: “These awards recognise high quality design and build – meaning it’s another endorsement that the Holroyd is a fabulous addition to the local area with its professional quality performance, function and display spaces”.

Finalists for the West Midlands LABC Building Excellence Awards will be announced on Thursday 10th September 2020.
